Breakin' the law

Reed has his first run in with law this morning. I was hoping we could avoid these sort of confrontation all together, and definitely never expected to have to deal with this before he's even two! This morning, as Reed played in the living room, a sheriff's car parked beside our house. I thought it was strange, but thought it was even more strange when the officer got out of his car, and seeing me through the window, beckoned me outside. So out we went. The officer asked if there had been a 911 call from this house. No, I said. He asked if he had our address right, which he did. And then it dawned on me. Reed had been playing with the phone earlier!! Oops! Reed had dialed 911 (plus a lot of other numbers) then hit the call button. I explained to the officer and apologized profusely. He smiled (he was very good natured about the whole thing) and said he would usually explain the importance of 911 to kids, but recognized Reed was a bit young for this lecture! I felt terrible, because really, I should have been watching more closely, or better yet, not let him have the phone, but it's hard to say no to these eyes. I still feel a bit bad for having wasted the officer's time, but on the bright side, I can't imagine that 10 am on a Friday morning is a busy time for them.

Yeah, he looks like a hoodlum. It's the ones with the eyes you have to watch out for!

Evelyn loves the phone as well, we finally agreed that the cordless phone is "Not a Toy" She did not take well to that especially since it was a toy before. We have an old one that she can play with after we unplug it.

Grandma and Grandpa got her a really cute cordless phone toy. Yes it's electronic, but it's fairly quiet and not horribly obnoxious. This has helped to have her own phone.

Yup, definitely a hoodlum. I think he just needs some dark sunglasses to complete the look!!

Luke makes it sound as if we cured Evelyn's obsession with the phone, but she knows the difference between the real phone and play phones, which are only mildly satisfying. She still goes straight for the real deal when she gets half the chance. Accidental "911" calls are definitely a concern for us, as well as unintended long distance or toll calls. Oh yeah, you better watch out or Reed might "accidentally" dial 1-900-hot-bebe next.

You should look for a cordless phone that has an off button on the handset. Or maybe an old corded phone. Looks real but not functioning. We don't use the phone here at the apt. because we can't hide it from Robbie!

LOL! Reed has a toy phone too, but he is also not fooled by it. Sure, he plays with it, but it is not nearly as fascinating as the real thing. I think he wants what mommy and daddy have, and somehow, we just don't seem to place as many calls using that toy phone!

I had never thought about the possibility of 1-900 calls... The phone is definitely off limits now! :-)
