Sunday Morning Update

Here's a picture of Red being weighed. The last few hours have been a bit stressful.

Reed was moved, as a precaution, down to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Tacoma yesterday afternoon. He was doing ok here, but Harrison is a regional hospital that doesn't have the facilities to care for him, if he would have taken a turn for the worse, so the doctor felt that since we had the opportunity to move him, that that would be the safest thing for him. It was very difficult to let him go, especially after just meeting him, but he's got excellent doctors caring for him.

They sent a special team up here that transferred him, in first class style, and by he time he got down to Tacoma, he was already doing better. Last night, they said he was doing very well, and if he had been doing that well earlier, they probably wouldn't have moved him. Grandma and Grandpa Mills have been visiting him down there, so he's not all alone. Grandma and Grandpa Austin are on their way down to visit this morning.

We just talked to Tacoma again this morning, and they said they have him on room air, and he's doing fine, so Cammy will be able to breastfeed once we get down there. We'll be discharged from here later this morning, and will probably be staying in Tacoma until he is released, which hopefully will only be a few days from now. I doubt that they have wifi, so this is likely the last update until we get home.

I know that there are many of you who are anxious to talk to us and congratulate us, but please try to resist calling, as this is still a difficult situation for us. I've been reading Cammy all of the comments that are posted, and we may try to start calling people in the next few days, but may also wait until we get home.

That's great news! We've been sending you positive vibes from down here in San Francisco. Sarah, Robbie and I are looking forward to meeting Reed after Thanksgiving. It sounds like he'll have some interesting tales to tell

Please let us know if there's anything that we can do for you. Oh, and let Cammy know that I have a very nice Ameda electric pump that we never used if she needs one.

Love always,
M

Thanks for the update! Dave and I are thinking great thoughts for everyone and hope that everyone continues to rest and heal. I'm sure it will feel wonderful to be re-united this afternoon and that little Reed is in wonderful hands. Take Care, Love Emily and Dave

This is Grandma Mills - - it is Sunday 1:4o PM. I am headed back to Tacoma General to say hi to Reed and to Cammy after a couple of hours of sleep.

It was wonderful to watch him getting stronger and stronger last night. He was much better as soon as I saw him there but improved all through the night. Cammy said he just wanted to see the digs where his Momma was born. I said it boded for a boy with wanderlust. First day, Silverdale to Tacoma. By five or six he may be Rick Steves understudy.

Reed managed to miss his diaper at about 2 AM. He got his entire bassinet wet, he was definitely hungry and not afraid to let half of Tacoma know. It took two nurses to change everything and for the first time, they wrapped him up like a baby burrito (before that, they had had him mostly bare to watch monitor connections, IV, etc.).

They convinced him to work on the pacifier until Mamma could bring breakfast to him. His sucking is stronger and stronger as he has gotten stronger. Grandpa says, "Be afraid Cammy Lou. Be very afraid."

Cammy and Gerry are with Reed right now. Reed and Cammy are figuring out this nursing thing. Grandpa Mills got to hold him for hours early this morning and Grandparents Austin came about noon to do the same. He is ready to be checked out of the NICU as soon as they have room for him elsewhere. Cammy and Gerry are waiting for what is called an "apartment" to move to there are the hospital. All's well with the world.
